The Manitoba Law Journal is one of the two flagship journals authorized by the UM Law Faculty Council. The other journal is the Canadian Journal of Human Rights.

Core Mission

We aim to produce high calibre, readable and relevant scholarship. We focus on the special interest and legal developments to our communities in Manitoba. Our mission is to bring to bear on these developments through first-rate scholarship from around the world, and to create content that is worthy of world-wide-interest. The source of our mandate is from the UM Law Faculty Council.

The Overall Operation

Executive Leadership: The overall operation is led by Bryan Schwartz and Darcy MacPherson as co-executive-editors-in-chief. Various Faculty members serve as Dimension Editors associated with one of the eight subject matter dimensions of the Journal. Student editors work under the direction of Faculty Editors.

Our Team

The Manitoba Law Journal has a board of editors that meet quarterly to discuss issues that impact all Dimensions of the Manitoba Law Journal.

Two-tier, double-blind, peer-review process

All dimensions of the Manitoba Law Journal maintain the core mission. We generally use a two-tier review process which consists of an Internal Review by Faculty Dimension Editors and a double-blind external peer review.

Core Administration

All dimensions of the Manitoba Law Journal use Scholastica for overall tracking of the journal. Content of the Manitoba Law Journal is available through a CC-BY-ND creative commons license in an Open-Access format through this website, the University of Alberta Open Journal system, CanLII and other distribution partners (including HeinOnline, LexisNexis QuickLaw Advance, WestLaw Next and Google Play). Funding

Core Funding, for the overall operation of the MLJ, which includes at least two summer students who assist with all dimensions of the Manitoba Law Journal, the Manitoba Law Journal has relied on SSHRC grants, Law Faculty Endowment, and proportionate contribution to central operations from endowed funds (Asper Chair, Desautels Chair).

The Current Legal Landscape, Underneath the Golden Boy, and The Legal Profession are all funded by the Faculty of Law Endowment Fund. When the Manitoba Law Journal conducts an original research project, it will seek support from the Legal Research Institute, or other sources.

Editorial Direction

Faculty Editors have substantial autonomy, the Editors-in-Chief provide guidance on overall policies and operations.
